It looked like the Delaware Military Academy girls’ basketball team’s quest to win a home playoff game would be extended yet another year after a scoreless first quarter Wednesday night against Diamond State rival Wilmington Charter.

That was before first-year guard Tavi Prado played a one-girl game of H-O-R-S-E and sophomore forward Maya Hill established post position in leading the Seahawks to a 43-27 win over the Force in DIAA girls’ basketball first round action.

“This is a big win for our program,” DMA head coach Jeremy Jeanne said. “When I started with this group four years ago, we were losing big, and now we’re winning the state tournament.”

“I know our seniors are happy,” added Prado, who scored 13 points. “We’ve got them a win in the tournament and now we have to get ready for Appo and we’re excited about that.”

The story didn’t start off happy as the Force (11-10) led 7-0 after a first quarter that saw the Seahawks turn the ball over five times.

Prado quickly shot her team back into contention with three second quarter three-point bombs – all of which happened to be bank shots.

“I don’t know,” she chuckled when asked when she was trying to hit the glass on each shot. “I hit the first two and I said ‘Ok, the bank’s open,” so I went for it.”

Prado’s nine second-quarter points were supplemented by six from Hill, who ended up with a game-high 16 points.

“We just got ourselves together like we’ve done all season,” Hill said. “We talked to ourselves and decided we wanted to win this game.”

DMA advances to the second round Friday night, where they’ll visit 7 seed and Flight A champion Appoquinimink. Junior guard Danielle Kanse led Wilmington Charter with 7 points.
