Delaware men

The Blue Hen men went 2-1 at the Cathedral Classic which was held at the historic Palestra in Philadelphia this weekend.

The Hens (3-3) pulled out a close 72-68 win over Colgate Friday, then blasted Hartford 78-50 Saturday afternoon before falling to host Penn 83-70 Sunday afternoon. In the game against the Quakers, Jameer Nelson Jr. tied a career high with 30 points. Sophomore forward Jyare Davis (Sanford) scored a season-high 24 in the win over Colgate and added 18 points against Penn.

UD returns to action Thursday with a visit from Cornell.

Delaware women

The UD women split two games at the Daytona Beach Invitational this past weekend.

The Hens lost 53-49 to Fresno State Friday but rebounded to edge Big Ten member Illinois 83-80 the next day. Senior forwards Makyala Pippin and Klarke Sconiers led five Blue Hens in double figures with 18 points. Kharis Idom scored 12 points while Tara Cousins and Nakiyah Mays-Prince each added 11.

UD hosts Delaware State this coming Wednesday.

Delaware State men

The lone game this past week for the Hornet men was an 80-53 loss at Liberty University on Friday. Sophomore guard Khyrie Staten scored 16 points to pace DelState, who visits St. Francis College of Brooklyn on Wednesday before returning to Memorial Hall on Saturday to host Longwood (VA).

Delaware State women

The DSU women split their two contests last week ahead of a visit to Newark this coming Wednesday.

The Lady Hornets scored their most points in nearly four seasons with an 88-48 romp over New Jersey City University last Monday. Four DSU players hit double figures, led by guard Alexis Moragne’s 16 points. Forward Ty Tollie recorded a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds in the win.

DSU hung tough with Patriot League member Loyola (MD) before losing 60-51 Saturday. Moragne once again led the team with 13 points.

Del Tech men

In their only game of the week, the Delaware Tech men outscored RCSJ-Cumberland 98-91 Tuesday to improve to 5-3 on the season. First-year guard Ethan Schmidt led all scorers with 31 points while Caesar Rodney grad Syed Myles added 29 in the win. Smyrna’s Cole Matthews (14) and Glasgow’s Devin McDowell (12) also reached double figures for DTCC, who visits Lackawanna College Tuesday.

Goldey-Beacom men

The Lightning men dropped their home opener to Saint Thomas Aquinas 95-70 on Sunday, their only game of the week. Junior guard Ayshion Centeno scored 19 points to lead GBC, who returns to action Saturday at the Jones Center with a visit from CACC rival Holy Family at 3 pm.

Goldey-Beacom women

The Lightning women also had a rough go of it, losing 93-64 to visiting Millersville on Tuesday. St. Elizabeth’s Rory Ciszkowski made three three-point shots for nine points for GBC. Goldey hosts Bowie State Wednesday and Holy Family on Saturday.

Wilmington men

The Wildcat men played one game last week and it was a big one, leading wire to wire in a 91-74 win over host West Chester last Monday. Jordan Jackson and Randy Rickards (Cape Henlopen) paced WilmU with 23 points while Justin Thomas (Newark Charter) added 17 points in the W. The Wildcats visit Kutztown tonight and CACC foe Chestnut Hill on Saturday.

Wilmington women

The Wildcat women were overpowered by the College of Staten Island 80-31 on Tuesday in their only game of the week. The St. Georges duo of Amber Washington and Trinity Brittingham led the Lady Wildcats with seven and six points respectively. WilmU returns to action with a CIAA roadtrip this weekend, first at Elizabeth City State on Saturday, then Bowie State on Sunday.

Delaware duo pacing Towson women

Former Caesar Rodney standout Kylie Kornegay-Lucas and Caravel grad India Johnston are key contributors to the Towson women’s basketball team’s 4-2 start.

Kornegay-Lucas, the reigning Colonial Athletic Association’s Sixth Woman of the Year, has moved into the starting lineup for the Lady Tigers and leads them in scoring (17.5 per game), rebounds (7.3), assists (4.9), steals (3.8) and free throw percentage (87.9).

Johnston, a first-year guard who has won the last two Delaware Sportswriter and Broadcasters Girls’ basketball Player of the year awards, is averaging 8.4 points per game for Towson and leads the team in most three-point field goals made (13)

Hearn, Pulliam leading Kutztown women

Cape Henlopen graduate Abbey Hearn and St. Elizabeth’s Naia Pulliam are among the leaders in a host of categories so far this season for the Kutztown women’s basketball team.

Hearn, a 6’2 junior forward, leads the Golden Bears in scoring at 14.4 points per game, second in rebounds (5.6). Hearn also has taken (20) and made the most (16) free throws on the team.

Pulliam, a 5’10 sophomore guard/forward is second in scoring (10.4 points per game) while leading the team in assists (2.8 per game) and field goal percentage (45.7).

Old rivals meet

The Sanford-Ursuline wars have been hotly contested for years and continued at the college level this past weekend as Warrior alum Lauren Park-Lane led Seton Hall’s women into battle against former Raider star Alisha Lewis and the University of Georgia at the annual Paradise Jam in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Park-Lane, on the John Wooden Award watch list for NCAA D1 women’s basketball players, scored 23 points and handed out nine assists as the Lady Pirates handed the Lady Bulldogs their first loss of the season 86-80. Lewis, who transferred from Central Florida this summer, contributed 10 points, seven assists and four steals before fouling out.

Park-Lane leads Seton Hall in scoring (19.9 per game) and assists (5.7 per game), while tied for the team lead in steals (12) and has the most three-pointers made (14).

Lewis is averaging 8.5 points and 3.3 assists per game and is currently third in total steals (10) for UGA.

Smith scores season high in Neumann romp

Justin Smith, a Delcastle graduate, helped contribute to a big win for Neumann University’s men’s basketball over PSU-Brandywine last week.

Smith, a 6’3 senior forward, scored a season-high 19 points on a perfect 8-for-8 from the field and 3-for-4 from the free throw line as the Knights clobbered the Nittany Lions 93-61 on Tuesday November 22nd. Smith leads Neumann (4-2 on the season) in field goal percentage, making 68.4 percent of his attempts.

Allen scoring in bunches for West Chester

Dover graduate Elijah Allen, the 2020 DSBA Boys’ player of the year, is making an immediate impact on the West Chester men’s basketball team after transferring from Wagner University.

Allen, a 6’2 sophomore guard, is third on the Golden Rams in scoring at 15 points per game, tied for the most three-point field goals made (11) and leads West Chester in free throw percentage (93.8). His season high is 22 points, scored  twice against Elizabeth City State University of the CIAA and against Wilmington University.
