Wildcats lock down Rams, remain unbeaten in Flight B

Trailing 21-9 in someone else’s gym almost always never ends well for any visiting team.

The Howard boys basketball team proved to be the exception to that rule Tuesday afternoon.

Behind the hot shooting of sophomore guard Antonio Randell and a stifling defense, the undefeated Wildcats held Dickinson to 23 second-half points in a 63-57 win that gave them sole possession of first place in Flight B.

Randle fired in four three-points shots, including the go-ahead trey with 30 seconds left in the third quarter, for a team-high 14 points. Xavier Richards-Powell added 12 points while De’Mere Hollingsworth and Darius Brown Jr. contributed 10 and nine points respectively for Howard (6-0, 6-0 Flight B)

The Rams (4-3 overall, 4-1 Flight B) jumped out a 34-27 lead behind guard Jaylen Jenkins’ eight points. Howard began a full-court trap defense in the first half and by the third quarter, Dickinson came unglued as Howard turn turnover after turnover into layups to get back into the game. After a Trevis Lee layup pushed Dickinson back in front, Randell drained his final three from the right corner to give Howard a 48-47 lead after three.

The Wildcats chewed up clock and got stops when needed, capped by Brown’s swat of a Maurkel Harrigan layup in the final 15 seconds to preserve a five-point advantage.

Harrigan finished with a game-high 16 points for the Rams while Lee added 15.
