Sanford starts fast, finishes strong at Caravel

An 11-point halftime lead disappeared quickly for the Sanford girls’ basketball, but just as fast, they pulled away with the win.

Sophomore guard Zy Kilgoe led an 11-5 run to finish off the fourth quarter and a 56-50 win for the Warriors at Caravel, outlasting a game Buccaneers rally.

Sanford’s eighth straight win looked promising when Amiya Carroll and Dallas Pierce combined for 19 of the Warriors’ 32 first half points. Pierce scored seven points in the first quarter to stake Sanford to an 18-9 advantage after one and Carroll scored eight of her 12 first-half points in the second quarter, including a baseline three as time expired, for a 32-21 Sanford lead at the half.

Caravel rallied twice, first in the third quarter behind first-year guard Anaya Price’s 9-point spree, then India Johnston scored seven straight points for Caravel in the fourth quarter, including a pull-up three to tie the game at 45 with 3 minutes to go.

Kilgoe took the ensuing inbounds pass all the way to the rim for the go-ahead layup and split free throws around a Pierce putback shot to put Sanford ahead for good. Kilgoe and Pierce each finished with 12 points while Carroll had a game-high 15 for Sanford.

India Johnston led Caravel and all scorers with 18 points.
