With a winning record and spot in the state tournament already assured, the Wilmington Friends girls’ basketball team was looking to finish the regular season strong against a tough Wilmington Charter team.
Senior forward Kayla Farley did her part to ensure that, scoring a game-high 16 points to lead the Quakers to a 49-30 victory over the Force, finishing the regular season at 8-5. The senior trio of Farley, Madison McCoy and Meghan Malone combined for 29 of Friends’ 49 points
Charter (9-3) led 4-2 early, but a quick 7-0 run fashioned on baskets from Caelan Grubb, Malone and Farley helped Friends to an 11-7 lead after one.
McCoy took over in the second quarter, draining two three-pointers and another long shot just inside the line to stake the Quakers to a 21-12 halftime lead.
Charter got as close as 26-20 on eight third quarter points from first-year guard Danielle Kanse, but Farley and company slammed the door with a 19-2 run spanning eight minutes between the third and fourth quarters. McCoy and Grubb scored nine points each for Friends while Kanse led the Force with 10 points.
