Sophomore guard Ronnie Potts Jr. had a slow start to Saturday afternoon’s Flight A boys’ basketball game, but his quick finish pushed the Mount Pleasant boys’ basketball team to the lead by game’s end.
Potts Jr., scored all nine of his points during the Green Knights’ 16-8 fourth quarter run that saw them defeat Delcastle 35-33, earning a weekend sweep of the Cougars. Delcastle’s home gym is under repair, so the Cougars’ rescheduling saw them play a Thursday and Saturday game at Mount.
Delcastle (3-3) got nine first-half points from senior wing Jaheem Gadsden to tie the game at 15 at halftime and junior guard Gabe Valmond’s crafty driving layup gave the Cougars a 22-19 lead going into the fourth. Potts then scored Mount’s first five points of the quarter to tie the game at 24, hit a driving layup for a 27-26 lead at the 4 minute mark, then a final driving bucket for a 31-30 just over a minute later.
Mount led 34-30 when Valmond drained a three with 18 seconds left to pull Delcastle within one and after a Mount free throw and turnover, the Cougars had a chance to steal the game. Valmond’s three pointer at the buzzer went long and the Green Knights could celebrate.
