Usually for the Caravel girls’ basketball team, it’s India Johnston that gets the Buccaneers’ offense up and running, but Saturday afternoon against Woodbridge, her backcourt partner was the spark that pushed Caravel to a huge early lead.
First year guard Jasiyah Crawford spearheaded a 10-0 start to the game and the Bucs never looked back, leading wire-to-wire in a 56-42 over the Henlopen South-leading Blue Raiders.
Crawford’s two early drives and baskets helped Caravel (6-4) to a 10-0 lead and allowed them to set up a halfcourt pressure defense that frustrated Woodbridge for the duration of the first half.
The Blue Raiders (6-2) finally settled down behind senior center Cha’Kya Johnson, who used her height and footwork to get open looks at the basket and a game-high 24 points.
Caravel kept the pressure on in the second quarter as Johnston scored nine of her team-high 22 points in the period to boost the Bucs to a 30-14 halftime lead.
The second half was played just about even as Johnston, Crawford (15 points) and Taylor Wilkins converted layups aplenty in the third to increase the lead to 44-25 heading into the fourth quarter.
