Hornets name Waterman, Hill as new men’s and women’s basketball coaches

Delaware State University turns to a Delaware legend to right its men’s basketball program and a well-respected coach and former WNBA player to do the same for the women’s program.

Officially announced by press release today, Stan Waterman, who won 571 games and eight state championship as the head boys’ basketball coach at Sanford School, now takes over the reins of the Hornet men’s team while E.C. Hill, a veteran of six seasons between the ABL and the WNBA and recent Towson women’s assistant coach, will take over the women’s team.

Waterman brings an iconic resume to Dover, serving as Sanford head coach for 30 years and winning state titles in 1992, 2002, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2016, 2019 and 2021. He was an also an assistant coach on the 1991 Sanford championship team. Waterman was the point guard on two Howard Career Center state final four teams (1981 and 1983) and also has been an assistant coach with the USA Nike Hoop Summit’s 2017 and 2019 teams and earned gold medals as an assistant on the USA men’s basketball U17 team (2018) and U16 team (2017).

“In my 30-year career here I have been fortunate to have a few opportunities to coach at the college level,” Waterman said in Delaware State’s press release. “The truth is, none has been more appealing to me than Delaware State University. As a kid from Wilmington, with the village around constantly opening doors for me to be successful, I have devoted my life to doing the same for others. I cannot think of a better way to expand my passion for basketball and the development of young men than at this exceptional institution.”

E.C. Hill played at Northern Illinois University, leading NIU to three consecutive NCAA tournament appearances in the early 90s. Her pro career took her to Europe after stints with the New England Blizzard and Chicago Condors of the American Basketball League as well time spent with the Charlotte Sting, Phoenix Mercury, L.A. Sparks and Orlando Miracle in the WNBA.

Hill was the guard coach for Towson University last season, guiding Kionna Jeter to a team-leading 23 points per game and the 2020 WNBA draft, where she was selected in the third round by the Las Vegas Aces. Hill was head coach at Montverde Academy in Florida from 2016-2019 and an assistant at the University of Arizona from 2011-2016.
