Hornets’ defense stings Ducks in season opener

If you were looking for offense in Wednesday’s season-opening game between the Odessa High and Tatnall School boys’ basketball teams, you may have been disappointed.

You won’t hear very many complaints from the Hornets, who limited the first-year Ducks to just five field goals in the game and strung together enough hoops of their own for a 27-12 win, the first for new Tatnall head coach Doug Nicholas.

“Defense carried us because we couldn’t make a shot,” Nicholas said. “We had open looks, just couldn’t make them, but we were able to defend and rebound to keep [Odessa] from getting second chances.”

The Hornets were led by junior guard MarQuel Fitzgerald, who scored eight points and fellow junior guard Isaiah Sales, playing his first game in almost two years, added six points. Both players, who Nicholas is counting on for leadership, proved his point by giving credit to freshman guard Jayce Banks, who scored five points and registered six steals on the evening.

“I loved his effort,” Fitzgerald said. “He got down there, made some key steals and that was big for us.”

“He came up with some big steals and that gave us moment,” Sales added.

Sophomore guard Zion Dunn scored six points to lead Odessa. The first varsity points in school history were scored by freshman guard Tyshawn Wilborn, who scored on a layup three minutes into the first quarter.
