Defense does it for Delcastle girls in first win of the season

The 2020-21 season was a lost one for the Delcastle girls’ basketball team, as the program chose to take a hiatus due to COVID concerns. Back on the floor (a brand new one in the Delcastle gym, that is) this season, the Cougars are happy to get after it on the defensive end, which they did in a major way in a 41-26 win over New Castle County Vo-Tech rival Howard Thursday afternoon.

Senior center Emani Lucas-Davis almost came up with a triple-double – 10 points, 10 rebounds and seven blocked shots. Several of those blocks ignited the fast break, allowing the speedy Delcastle guards to get easy buckets, most notably Kymora Jones (the game’s leading scorer with 14 points) and Ny’Asia Brown (12 points) as the Cougars (1-3) jumped out to an 18-1 lead in the second quarter and cruised from there.

“If we’re getting stops, then that means the other team isn’t scoring and we can get our offense going,” said Lucas-Davis.

“It’s teamwork,” added Brown. “If I’m delayed coming off the screen, then I can count on the person behind me to pick the other person up.”

Makayla Ellerbe led Howard (0-1) with 10 points and Kaniah Murray-Chambers added eight for the Wildcats.
