Hopefully everyone is staying safe and doing the best they can with remote learning and other challenges in the time of Corona. The purpose of this column is to announce a thing and share some thoughts about where we are currently in life and in the sports world.
As fall practice enters the midway point (first games start October 19, so best of luck to the fall athletes!), it won’t be long after the shortened fall season starts that winter practice will be on the way and of course for us, that means basketball. While we’ve all been hoping for a flattened curve and all, I’ve been thinking of ways to make Year Two for First State Hoops Report even better than the first.
And the main idea came to me as soon as last season ended abruptly, though it was hard to hold on to it for about six months, but yes – starting with the 2020-21 season, First State Hoops Report will be adding a boys’ and girls’ basketball Player Of The Week award to our coverage. Last season was really just about us getting our name out there – in a competitive media environment like ours, that’s absolutely necessary – but now that coaches/parents/fans/players have seen us, we’re ready to improve on our coverage.
Having a Player Of The Week award is a way to celebrate the achievement of Delaware High School basketball players and there were some performances we missed last year because lack of manpower (that will likely change this season as well, so stay tuned).
This is where you come in – coaches, ADs, fans, parents, friends of players and so on. If you know of a player that has had an outstanding week individually and/or helped the team win a big game, you are more than welcome to nominate them for our boys’ and girls’ POTW honor.
Just shoot us an e-mail at [email protected] with that player’s name/school/class/stats for the week on either Saturday or Sunday of that week and if we have enough nominees, we’ll post Twitter and Facebook polls to help us decide the winner for that week. Easy, right?
That of course depends on everyone staying safe, washing their hands, staying six feet apart and staying masked up. This has not been an easy time for any of us, and I know the athletes are chomping at the bit to get some normalcy in their lives, but I just want to remind you all that this virus is no joke – doesn’t care how old you are, how healthy you are, your race, your gender, none of it – it is a deadly virus and it shouldn’t be taken lightly. Sure we want to see sports, but we also don’t want anyone’s lives at risk either. Please be safe.
Getting up shots as always,
Chris Stevens, Editor
