2019-20 College Corner Recap Vol. 1

Aside from our local high school athletes shining in a shortened season, quite a few Delaware High School graduates had successful seasons on the college hardwood. Here’s our first in a brief weekly series of recaps of Delaware’s finest at the next level. If there’s anyone we are missing, e-mail us at [email protected].

Brian Cameron, Wesley College (DMA)

Delaware Military Academy graduate and Newark resident Brian Cameron capped his amazing career at Wesley College this season, leading the Wolverines to their First Atlantic East Conference title and a spot in the NCAA Division III tournament.

A 6’1 senior guard, Cameron earned every honor possible, including his second straight AEC Men’s player of the year award, D3Hoops.com First Team All-Atlantic Region and D3Hoops’ All American Team.

Cameron finishes his career as Wesley’s all-time leading scorer with 2,399 points, edging his way past former Sussex Tech star Roshawn Johnson (2,394 career points) in leading the Wolverines to their first NCAA tournament appearance since 2014.

Kaylee Otlowski, Salisbury University (Caravel)

Salisbury sophomore forward Kaylee Otlowski, a Caravel graduate, was named first-team all-conference for women’s basketball in the Capital Athletic Conference.

The 6-foot Otlowksi led the Sea Gulls in points per game (14), rebounds per game (10.2), blocks per game (1.2) and minute per game (32.8) and 15 double-doubles.

Nah’Shon Hyland, Virginia Commonwealth University (St. Georges Tech)

Nah’Shon “Bones” Hyland, a Wilmington native and St. Georges graduate, was named to the Atlantic 10 Conference’s all-rookie team for men’s basketball after a successful freshman year at Virginia Commonwealth University.

The 6’3 Hyland averaged 9 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists for the Rams, including breaking the school’s freshman record for three pointers in a season with 63.

Lauren Park-Lane, Seton Hall University (Sanford)

The 2019 girls’ basketball player of the year in Delaware, Sanford graduate Lauren Park-Lane concluded a successful freshman year as the starting point guard for the Seton Hall women’s basketball team.

Park-Lane led the Lady Pirates and was fourth overall in the Big East with 4.2 assists per game. She also scored a career high 17 points in Seton Hall’s 83-57 win over Butler in the Big East quarterfinals.

Justin Thomas (Newark Charter) and Keon Taylor (Mount Pleasant), Alvernia University

Alvernia University’s men’s basketball team were led by two Delaware high school graduates in several categories this past season.

Sophomore forward Justin Thomas, a Newark Charter graduate, let the Wolves in points per game (18.5) and rebounds (5.8), while Mt. Pleasant alum Keon Taylor, a junior guard, finished third in scoring (12 ppg) and led the team in assists per game (4.7). Both Thomas and Taylor had multiple games of 30-plus points for Alvernia, who finished the season 13-13.

Terea Hunt (Caravel), Jaylin Ortiz (Delcastle), Kiara Stovall (Ursuline), Kortni Taylor (Mt. Pleasant) and Kendra Warren (Caravel) – Neumann University

Neumann University in Aston PA could’ve been called the University of Delaware this year as five players with Delaware high school roots took the court for the Knights this season.

Freshman guard/forward Terea Hunt, a Caravel graduate, was second on the team in scoring (11.3 points per game) and the team leader in rebounds (7 per game), steals (52) and blocks (21).

Junior guards Jaylin Ortiz (Delcastle) and Kiara Stovall (Ursuline) finished fourth and fifth on the Knights in scoring at 7.7 and 6.8 points per game respectively. Ortiz was second on the team in rebounds (6.3 per game) and Stovall was second in assists (52).

Mount Pleasant graduate Kortni Taylor appeared in 25 games, averaging 3.2 points and 2.4 rebounds per game, along with 21 steals.

Caravel graduate Kendra Warren took the floor in four games for Neumann, averaging 4.3 points and 3.8 rebounds per game.
